Day 33: The pestilence

Well, it seems that I might die after all. And probably come back if I don´t kill myself. I probably got tuberculosis. I've checked the symptoms of coughing up blood, high fever and a loss for appetite in our home doctor book and the Internet. My diagnosis seems to be correct. Apparently dead bodies can spread TB. No wonder health departments always disinfect and recommend a quick disposing of the dead during and after big disasters. Like in the big tsunami that hit the UK a couple of years back.

And I thought that I was making some feeble joke when I wrote about the pestilence. It proved to be a smart move to quarantine me from the rest, even though Sebastian shows some minor symptoms. We truly need antibiotics!

Maria's going out today to scout the houses while Johnny covers for her on the roof of the nearby school. It's poorly prepared but we have to make it quick, they will try to outrun them.

If I had any strength in me and, if Seb had been completely healthy I'd rather die than let them make this move. And if they don't find anything they must go down to the pharmacy, but that needs planning. I really hope that it hasn't been completely looted.

But I'm pretty sure one of the houses of the walking dead will hold some antibiotics... it must!

Please, please pray for my family!
Jonas

Day 30: Undead friends

diaryPosted by Jonas Tue, April 08, 2008 12:16:38

We did find some great stuff when we scouted the houses and there's more just waiting for us.
If it were possible we probably could secure some of the surrounding buildings, maybe build a fence or, even better, dig a moat. It would probably make our lives easier and we would have a better chance of survival. Another safe house would mean more food, storage room and with a moat and a fence we would probably be able to grow something, now with spring coming (even though there's snow in the air right now). We have quite a lot of potatoes with nice sprouts in the cellar.

Of course this would mean that we'd have to do quite a lot of re-killing. And I think that we need some outsider to kill the undead versions of all our friends. Regardless of how many times we try to convince ourselves and each other that those bastards aren't our friends, the heart says otherwise.

Day 29: A plan?

diaryPosted by Jonas Mon, April 07, 2008 09:04:32

It’s kind of quiet here since our return. Due to my illness I’m mostly in bed, separated from the others if it’s contagious. Sebastian is playing the latest (and probably the last) in the never-ending Phoenix Wright-saga and, the others are passing time together with something that looks more like apathy than anything else.

The fact that we have more guns, ammo, and that we managed to pick off quite a few of the revivers surrounding our house also add to our false sense of security.

I’m kind of unwell but I must put down some things from the latest discussions we've had in the house.

After a couple of days of skulking between the houses me and Johnny got to the rise we were heading for. As zombies are terrible climbers we knew we’d be kind of safe up there. In hindsight it's obvious that if we had ran really fast to the mound it had been possible to reach in just half an hour. The following zombies would be easily picked of from the top.

With enough determination, weapons and ammo this strategy could even be regarded as a plan. Maria is very enthusiastic about it. It’s physically possible but I think it could prove too stressful given that the stinkers often carry the faces of someone you know. Anyway, this strategy could easily work with rooftops as well, but be sure to not give away the location of your safe house.

Day 25: Habit of the Dead

diaryPosted by Jonas Thu, April 03, 2008 10:13:44

I' m infected. No, not bitten!! No, I've got some kind of illness from interacting with the undead. I'm not well at all... I didn't think about all the diseases they must carry, like rats. And of course its contagious, and of course I got some pestilence or whatever... Bastards! So I must stay in bed for a while I suppose.

Well anyway, when we were outside the house we got a little closer look at the undead and it brought some clarity to their habits. At least how they act in the dark. As I mentioned before they seem pretty slow (more so than usual) when it's dark. At first I thought that the dark simply made it hard for them to see but as you probably have seen, on TV if not in real life, revivers are quite functional without any eyes at all.

Do you remember those brutal, macabre experiments on TV where they removed for humans vital organs? When one sense fails the others seemed to get stronger, better. They're really like homing missiles when it comes to human, warm flesh, no matter which sense they use. I know, that show was really unpleasant, but managed to say something on what makes them tick.

The similarities to the horror classic Day of the Dead was striking. Remove the intestines and see what will happen, it didn't make sense at all at the time. But it actually makes it understandable how those walking corpses work even if they look unable to move at all. One ear is enough for them to navigate, pretty poorly of course but not less dangerous.

Anyhow, I do not think that they are slower at night because the dark makes it hard to see. I think it has to do with cognition. Deep-rooted reactions, as that of sleeping when it gets dark, must have an impact on them as well. If that's the case they must have other kinds of trained reactions – for example fear of heights? If they had no fear of hight we would probably get rid of them pretty soon.

I think we have missed a lot of cultural behavior regarding the grabbers. I'm pretty sure they didn't have any cultural analysists on the teams when they made all the tests. Mainly because everybody panicked but also because the human sciences doesn't have much recognition within the academic system, so why would a bunch of ethnologists or social psychologists be included in these highly biological experiments? These tests were mainly focused on the core impulses, yes eating. What does it take to stop a zombie from this aggressive compulsion to eat? Of course re-death turned out to be the only cure.

Day 22: A state of rage

diaryPosted by Jonas Mon, March 31, 2008 16:22:31
Posted: 20190331

As promised I actually found some WS games for Sebastian on our trip through the vicinity. It put a smile on his face. Fun, fascinating and kind of scary that things that made you happy in the old world still do. Like some kind of learned or drilled behavior...
I'm also delighted when I get to drink some wine or play table hockey with my son, although i should never be delighted, happy, pleased, about anything in this situation. I should be in a constant state of rage, and in my heart I think I actually am.

I'm furious at all the fucking terrors that without hesitation, or reason, can and will destroy our lives in an instant. At this rate a normal pneumonia would kill us since we're probably soon out of antibiotics. Sure, it's probably fixable, but you know what I mean.. Life is barley worth living when death's constantly upon us.

Why do we value our lives so much when a simple mistake or fate can snuff it out easier than a birthday cake candle? Or is life so valuable exactly because of that? Like some “we're lucky to be alive, so make the best of it” crap?

Well I don't know, and I don't really care. If life is shitty... it sure is hard to appreciate.

Day 21: The lost sons

diaryPosted by Jonas Sun, March 30, 2008 08:07:11

Posted: 20190330

We're back!

I hope you haven't been too worried on our behalf, you have your selves to worry about. The little field trip went all right, but we had to move pretty cautious and slowly between the houses. If a reviver got a whiff of our movement we had to wait them out in agonizing silence from inside the nearest house.

The only major incident was when we hid in the local garage. Some of them was inside and we actually had to beat them to death. The garage's swallows a great amount of sound, being built in pretty thick concrete and all, but the sound of a gunshot would most definitely have penetrated the walls. Luckily a garage has a lot of useful tools, to repair cars with, but also to fight and crush skulls with. And the place, as every garage I've ever seen, was filled with spare parts and junk everywhere which made it pretty easy to keep the zombies confused.

Anyway I can tell you that it was really tough to kill those revivers. I've learned pretty fast that there is a big difference shooting someone from a distance or to kill them eye to eye. The further away from the victim the better. I can almost get now how people can drop bombs on whole cities or fire missiles on another country. It's so abstract. This was all but abstract, especially when you know many of them. I couldn't handle snuffing out Eric's daughter, I just couldn't but Johnny stepped up and got rid of her.

Am I more squeamish because I've never hunted or killed any animals? Are we prone to be less empathic by killing animals, or through that able to distinguish human life from unhuman? Or is it just so that older people (sorry Johnny) knows how to handle themselves in an emergency? They just get things done, you know? It's probably the only way to survive this brave new world.

Well, I'll continue later on. Now we're celebrating the return of the lost sons, or lost geezers, with some vino – and pretzels. Luxury!

Day 13: On a mission

diaryPosted by Jonas Sat, March 22, 2008 20:24:16

Posted: 20190322

I do not know if anyone actually reads this. No one leaves any commentaries or they simply don't work.

Anyhow, we've decided that we have to get some air, two weeks inside are far too much and it's time we acctually did something. So we will sneak past the bastards at night so we, in the morning, can get some training with the rifle and decimate the number of zeds at the same time.

We'll scout the other houses for more ammo and guns, then it's time for some target practice for me and Johnny. When I put it like that it really looks like the men will do the fighting and grow chest hair, while the women stays with the children (as ususal). But it's not as simple as it sounds. Maria is the superior sharp-shooter but I really have to learn how to handle firearms. And, both of us leaving Sebastian behind would be really bad parenting.

So its down to one who knows how to shoot and one who maybe can learn. If this was an American movie I had given Sebastian the manly burden of protecting the women, because of his sex. Now I can assure you, my Maria's tougher than any ten year old boy, and many full-grown men.

I've promised to return alive and with a few new games for his WS, if I find any in the search for ammo. I will keep my promise.

So long!

Day 12: Black coffee

diaryPosted by Jonas Fri, March 21, 2008 10:58:39

Posted 20190321

I've slept until now. Two sleepless nights and one of them pressed to the floor, surrounded by zombies – it took it's toll. Today I feel kind of invigorated. I've just realized that the look of this blog is pretty boring, to say the least. Just a streaming flow of text, without pictures, sounds or videos from Youtube or Vido. We're used to a little more on the Net. But what should I show you on these pages? You all know how the world looks today and to display my family members just seems weird and kind of uncalled for. So this is officially the look of this blog of mine – it's just a diary. Besides, how ”funny” could it be anyway?

We have lots and lots of coffee down here, that's pretty nice, but I wish we would have thought more on the ”milk-issue”. I suppose you get used to black coffee in a while... Typical, petty human complaint ”I have piles of coffee but poor me, I don't have any milk”. That kind of I-want-more-than-I-already-got-whine will have to stop. Right now...

A small gang of revivers are still waiting around our house, as if they remember the light. Therefore we've decided that keep all the lights off, yes, even in the basement. That way we're free to move around the house. Of course, all of us, but the guard, should sleep at night but we're all pretty jumpy, and really, really restless since we never can leave the house. It's getting bloody cramped in here...
